Guest Post – Stacy Gail – Cookie Monster – Contest!

November 29, 2013 Uncategorized 5

Please join me in welcoming Stacy to the blog!!

Carina_1113_9781426897474_StartingScratch

She wrote the wonderful Starting From Scratch that I recently reviewed here.  Anyway…  I have enjoyed many of her stories and invited her to share with us anything that came in to her head…

 Cookie Monster

Before I begin, I’d like to thank Steph for giving me a chance to chat about STARTING FROM SCRATCH, a military homecoming-themed holiday novella.  It’s one half of Carina Press’s GIFTS OF HONOR, with the other half comprised of Rebecca Crowley’s wonderful story, HERO’S HOMECOMING. Happy holidays, everyone!

*

When I first outlined STARTING FROM SCRATCH, I decided to make the heroine, Lucy, a baker.  Why?  I needed something familiar about her that would trigger a response in the amnesiac hero, Sully.  I chose the scent of cookies, coupled with a never-ending craving for them, to represent his subconscious desire to find his way back to the woman he loved.  And it made sense.  This was a holiday novella, so naturally cookies would be an everyday part of the background.

Sounds simple, right? Yeah.  This is how it actually went.

Day 1: I name this latest project A Craving for Cookies (Harlequin later changed it to Starting from Scratch).  Opening scene is in a kitchen with spiced cupcakes and mounds of cream cheese frosting… Mmmmm.  Frosting.  I spend the evening baking. You know, to get in the spirit of things. Yay, new project!

Day 3: Research-mode.  I had to find the right kind of holiday cookie.  Something unique yet memorable.  An ordinary Tollhouse cookie wouldn’t cut it.  I shuffle through about a hundred cookie recipes on Pinterest and try some of these recipes out. For research.

Day 9:  My jeans are tight.  Must’ve shrunk in the wash.  There’s a scene where Lucy’s decorating sugar cookie cutouts.  That sounds like fun.  I should bake some…

Day 16: My feet are gaining weight.  I know this, because my day job is a figure skating coach, and I just busted a skate lace and am now oozing out of my skates.

Day 21:  The end of the book is in sight, and there’s a gingerbread house scene.  I have to describe the rich aromas of vanilla, ginger and so much sugar it can be tasted with every breath….  God, I want sugar so freaking much.  But no.  No more baking for me.  After all, why bake WHEN I HAVE THIS ENTIRE BAG OF OREO DOUBLE STUFS ALL TO MYSELF???

Day 23: I have no clothes that fit anymore. I consider wearing a bed sheet to work.  Togas were once cool, right? But I don’t really care about my wardrobe, because I finished my holiday novella! I should celebrate with cookies…

I’ll admit it—I may have lost my mind and turned into a cookie monster when I wrote STARTING FROM SCRATCH, but I gained something too.  Weight.  Lots and lots of weight. What’s more, I don’t have a single regret about it, but I really do wish togas would come back into style. I’d rock that look.

QUESTION: Have you ever read a “food” scene in a book that inspires you to eat? (Harry Potter’s Hogwarts feasts usually did me in).

Blurb for STARTING FROM SCRATCH:

Christmas is the perfect time to start from scratch

Lieutenant Sully Jax saved his unit during an IED attack, but he couldn’t save his marriage. He can’t even remember it. Recovered from his injuries, he’s come home to the family and friends he knows—and an ex-wife who’s a stranger to him.

Lucy Crabtree was heartbroken last Christmas when Sully announced his plan to go on one last tour of duty, and devastated when he asked for a divorce after he awoke in the hospital with no memory of her. She’s finally moving on from her hurt and from losing the man she loved more than anything, and her cookie-baking business is taking off just in time for the holidays. But now Sully’s back, and she can’t deny she still loves him. But how can she trust her heart to someone who breaks it every time she sees him?

Sully might not remember Lucy, but something inside won’t let her go. With every bite of her cookies, he finds a new love for Lucy, and he soon realizes he wants to rebuild his life… with her by his side.

Guest Post – Brian Freyermuth – The World Underneath – Demon Dance Tour (Contest)

October 29, 2013 Uncategorized 1

Please help me welcome Brian Freyermouth to the blog in support of his novel – Demon Dance. I found the premise of this story intriguing and asked him to share with us how he came up with the idea about a split reality…

The World Underneath
by Brian Freyermuth
What if there was a hidden world that lies beyond the edges of what we call reality? As a child I walked with Lucy through the wardrobe to Narnia and rode the tesseract with Meg and her friends in A Wrinkle in Time. My favorite, though, was adventuring with Jon-Tom as he traveled from our world to a place where giant otters cursed like sailors and turtles were wizards in the Spellsinger series by Alan Dean Foster. All of these novels hold a promise of a magical world that exists just beyond our fingertips

Hidden World at Home
As a young adult I came across another kind of hidden world, where magical places exist right here in our own backyard. My first real experience with urban fantasy was the Sandman comics by Neil Gaiman. The world looked like ours, but take one step through the curtain and you entered a terrifying and wondrous place where dreams were real and ancient gods walked among us.

Demon Dance
In Demon Dance, magical beings walk among us in secret. As I began outlining the story, I realized that in this day and age of YouTube and cell phones, how would a world like this stay hidden? If a demon with no eyes went on a rampage in a small coffee shop in Seattle, wouldn’t people know about it?
A secret group called the Watchers were the answer. These figures in scarlet are anonymous in nature as well as judge and executioner. They don’t care about one or two witnesses, but when a major event spins out of control, they show up to clean up the mess. Wiping the memories of witnesses seems to be only the tip of their powers, and even the major heavyweights of this hidden world are terrified of them.
The Watchers appear briefly in Demon Dance, but they are a major part of the mythology of the world. Later in the series, as we delve more into the adventures of Nick and his friends, we’re going to learn a lot more about who this group is, and how they’ve been able to function in secret for hundreds, if not thousands, of years.

The World Beyond Ours
This secret world of magic, demons, angels and forgotten gods is the core of Demon Dance and the Sundancer series. They walk among us without our knowledge, and all it takes is one moment, by accident or design, to make us walk through the curtain and see the wonder and horror that lies beyond.

You can run all you want, but the game’s in your blood. And blood never forgets…

Nick St. James was born different. His extraordinary gifts have saved him time and time again, but they couldn’t save the one thing he loved most: his wife.

Now he just wants to forget his old life, but more importantly, he wants to forget the magical underworld that lives beneath the “real” world. A place where a man’s faith can determine the very fabric of reality. Where ancient forgotten gods walk hidden among us, and angels and demons fight for our very souls.

But nothing stays hidden forever. Nick’s peaceful world is ripped apart when a demon slaughters his ex-partner and marks him for death. Now he must use all his gifts to find the one who summoned the nightmarish creature, but more importantly, he needs to find the one thing he lost long ago.

Himself.

Brian now has added novelist to his bestselling career. In April 2013 he released a hot new urban fantasy, Demon Dance, on Kindle. After only a couple of weeks it reached number 13 on Amazon’s Bestseller Rank for Kindle Urban Fantasy eBooks.

Since the days of the Commodore 64, Brian spent his youth writing novels or playing games. He earned a B.A. from the University of California Irvine in Comparative Literature which he uses in both writing for games as well as crafting his novels.

Today, Brian leads a content team at Xaviant as they create an exciting new game, Lichdom: Redeemer, scheduled for release in the summer of 2014. Cover Reveal – Serena Bell’s Still So Hot plus Upcoming Titles!!

October 23, 2013 Uncategorized 0

All I have to say is this cover is STEAMY HOT!!!!  I wouldn’t say “No” if he were to show up and make a move…  I’m just saying…

9780373797851

It’s wrong to play favorites, but I’ll confess that Brett Jordan is my favorite hero I’ve written so far. And not just because of that hip dip, that expression on his face, or whatever is happening off-screen at just-below-waist-level. He’s my favorite because he starts out at the beginning of Still So Hot! as an unrepentant serial womanizer and ends up dismantled, worked over, and thoroughly enjoyed by the matchmaker heroine whose dating boot-camp weekend his shenanigans have almost ruined. He’s not the same man by the end, except maybe for those bits you’re visually devouring right now.

Here’s the official blurb for Still So Hot!

Your “Dating Boot Camp” Itinerary

Day One:

Fly to a luxurious, five-star resort in St. Barts with your personalized dating coach, Elisa Henderson. Show up on the plane with a guy you just picked up. Find out Brett Jordan isn’t just a drool-worthy hottie with a rockin’ hard bod—he’s also a total player…and Elisa’s former best friend!

Day Two:

Be problematic. Disappear with a cute paparazzo. Besides, Elisa and Brett are now alone in a tropical paradise, and Elisa’s about to break the first commandment of date coaching: Thou Shall Not Sexily Ravage Your Client’s Date. Lost clients, naughty nighttime shenanigans, sleazy paparazzi… Can Elisa avoid a complete PR disaster, or is her reputation about to get the boot?

Serena Bell writes stories about how sex messes with your head, why smart people do stupid things sometimes, and how love can make it all better. She wrote her first steamy romance before she was old enough to understand what all the words meant and has been perfecting the art of hiding pages and screens from curious eyes ever since—a skill that’s particularly useful now that she’s the mother of two.

For a while, Serena took a break from penning love stories to explore the world as a journalist, where she spent time shadowing and writing about a cast of fascinating real-life characters.

When she’s not writing or getting her butt kicked at Scrabble by her kids, she’s practicing modern-dance improv in the kitchen, swimming laps, taking a long walk, or reading on one of her large collection of electronic devices.

Serena blogs about reading and writing romance at www.serenabell.com and www.wonkomance.com. She also tweets like a madwoman as @serenabellbooks and posts to Facebook at www.facebook.com/serenabellbooks.

Tease Me Release Party Day 6 – Meet the Johnsons – Melissa Schroeder!

October 7, 2013 Uncategorized 0

We are winding down the seven days of posts and I wanted to talk to you about the Johnsons.

Readers of the Santini series met two of them, Jack and Jesse, but the first book is about Bran.

The Johnsons are a typical military family. Their father, who is a general now, raised them on his own after their mother died—with the help of his mother. Maryanne-the heroine in Leonardo-was the only kid who decided the military was not for her but she does work at a military hospital. Jesse, Jack and Bran all followed in their father’s footsteps, including time at Annapolis-the Naval Academy.

Our first hero does something I understand well. Bran is a pilot and although he is a Marine, I know the breed well. My husband did not fly, but growing up in and around them, along with spending time with their spouses over the years, I understand their mentality and the sacrifices they make. For Bran, it is almost second nature.

While they are competitive and sometimes downright rude to each other, the Johnson siblings are a close-knit family. In fact, they are often on the verge of being too nosey.

I enjoyed writing the Santinis because of the family dynamics and I am having just as much fun with the Johnson brothers!

From an early age, Melissa loved to read. First, it was the books her mother read to her including her two favorites, Winnie the Pooh and the Beatrix Potter books. She cut her preteen teeth on Trixie Belden and read and reviewed To Kill a Mockingbird in middle school. It wasn’t until she was in college that she tried to write her first stories, which were full of angst and pain, and really not that fun to read or write. After trying several different genres, she found romance in a Linda Howard book.

Since the publication of her first book in 2004, Melissa has had close to fifty romances published. She writes in genres from historical suspense to modern day erotic romance to futuristics and paranormals. Included in those releases is the bestselling Harmless series. In 2011, Melissa branched out into self-publishing with A Little Harmless Submission and the popular military spinoff, Infatuation: A Little Harmless Military Romance. Along the way she has garnered an epic nomination, a multitude of reviewer’s recommended reads, over five Capa nods from TRS, twelve nominations for AAD Bookies, winning both Most Accessible Author and Author of the Year, and regularly tops the best seller lists on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. She recently had her first USA Today bestselling book, The Santinis Collection.

Since she spent her childhood as a military brat, Melissa swore never to marry military. But, as we all know, Fate has her way with mortals. She is married to an AF major and is raising her own brats, both human and canine. She spends her days giving in to her addiction to Twitter, happy her husband is finally retired and they are living where the bugs die in the winter.

A Plea for Sanity

June 29, 2013 Uncategorized 2

I’ve told myself that I just need to step away and not speak up but after the events over the past few weeks in both the blogging/reviewing world and the insanity in Texas I just can’t stay completely quiet.

Re:  Texas

As a former resident of Texas and having spent most of my formative years in the state I can’t help but feel extremely saddened by the behavior that seems to be prevalent in the State Legislature.  I applaud Sen Wendy Davis for her willingness to stand up and speak for the thousands of women that would be impacted by legislation specifically designed to target access to abortions.  I realize this is a very polarizing issue but we need to look beyond a single service provided by those clinics to the true impact if the legislation passes.  I also believe that the behavior we witnessed as she stood up points to an even larger issue where laws are bent to stop something the majority doesn’t like just because they believe they can.  I was happy that the attempt to claim the vote was taken at 11:59 pm when it was very blatantly taken after midnight ended up being exposed but I cannot help but be truly frightened for what this could have meant if it had been allowed to stand.  I also have to speak up and say I appreciated those Senators who stood up for Sen Davis and decried the poor treatment she was receiving while doing something that the rules permit and in past practice even supported by other members even if they didn’t agree with the filibuster in progress.  There needs to be a mutual respect if not for each other then respect the rules and traditions of the body you represent.  Now with Governor Perry forcing the issue in yet another special session I can’t help but hope that rational thought will somehow prevail and other issues can be handled than trying to regulate a woman’s reproductive choices.  I personally am pro-choice but do not believe abortion should be used as a form of birth control.  I’ve had friends and acquaintances that have made the decision to abort after much thought and consideration and I cannot condemn them for that decision I’m just so thankful they were able to do so in an environment that was safe for them.  I’ve also had former friends that made the decision to abort just because they chose not to use readily available birth control means and that does not sit well with me.  I found myself distancing myself from them because it made me re-evaluate exactly how they could fit in to my life if they were that irresponsible.  I mean I understand BC fails but to not use any just cause doesn’t sit well with me and if  you are going to do that then what other just cause decisions are you going to make???  Anyway off to another topic….

RE: Recent Plagiarism and Over-reaction

Recently we’ve had a few incidents of blatant plagiarists being uncovered by eagle-eyed readers.  We’ve also had some understandable paranoia developing as people closely scrutinize other authors in the same genre but the recent targeting of a respected blogger by an author and her fans just has me seeing red.  I understand we are all paranoid right now but can we please step back, breathe, count to ten and then sit down to talk rationally?

Authors – If a blogger/reader reaches out to you privately and respectfully via email to ask questions that were addressed to them by another reader/reviewer, please do the right thing and answer the questions with the same respect they are attempting to show you.  I understand that if they are asking you about your validity as a writer you might get your hackles up to defend yourself but take a second and realize that in the current environment people are jumping to conclusions very quickly and a rational discussion can only serve you better in the long run.  Remember they didn’t have to come to you privately but could have publicly posted the concerns they were sent but chose to speak to you one on one out of respect and a willingness to get to the truth versus fan a witch hunt.  Telling your fans about it via social media and fanning attacks on the blogger/reader via this method just serves to turn off others to your work as we’ve all seen too many recent examples of authors behaving badly to tolerate much more.

Bloggers/Reviewers – Can we please step back a second and realize that at times we are playing a part in the cycle of destruction?  I’ve seen a lot of knee jerk reactions from all of us to say we’ll never support an author again just because something has been taken out of context.  Authors are human and will make mistakes in the heat of the moment that shouldn’t result in them being blacklisted.  I try to look at the authors pattern of behavior and if the comment in question was a one-time misstep that was apologized for in a valid, rational fashion I think we should give them a second chance.  If the author actively promotes people attacking, harassing or behaving badly to a reader/blogger/reviewer then that is a completely different matter.  I know I personally returned a recent purchase because the author decided that it was garbage so I mean why should I pay my measly 99 cents to read it.  Was that a bit petty of me?  Yeah sure but you know what why should I spend money on something the author doesn’t support?  The return didn’t happen until I saw how the author attempted to rationalize what they wrote but I like many others decided that enough was enough.  I also have authors I won’t buy any more because of attacks they have encouraged on reviews that hurt their sensibilities but that has been my choice and I haven’t publicized those choices.  I also have an author whose books I still read but you will never see a review for on this site because of the way they behaved towards me when I approached them for a review copy they were blatantly begging for people to take on social media.  I won’t say that authors name either as that is my issue and I’m not going to tell others not to read/review/enjoy them.

All in all I just wish we could all take a step back and think rationally again as I for one am tired of seeing a ton of bickering and hate popping up all over the place.

In better news….  I cannot thank the Supreme Court for being able to see that blocking same-sex marriage and keeping those relationships being considered second class or illegal is stupid and outdated.  I hope that my friends and relatives that have healthy long-term same sex relationships will truly be able to enjoy the same freedoms and protections I can have in my own love life and I wish all those couples who have married in California since Prop 8 went away have long happy lives together.  I know not all of the marriages will last but hey they don’t last all the time in “traditional” cases either…

Thanks for letting me rant a bit on topics that have been bugging me and I hope you know you can always comment on posts or send me an email via my contact page if you ever want to let me know anything.

Welcome a New Reviewer – YA Only – M!!

May 28, 2013 Uncategorized 0

I promised news over the next few days as a part of moving my site to another platform…  Well here is part of it-

I have a new reviewer to the site for Young Adult titles only!  I’m keeping her full name quiet as she is a minor but on the site she will be going by M_BAHAnon.  She’s the daughter of one of my co-workers and at the age of 14 a good guide for YA.

As far as titles she will review, her mom and I will be skimming any titles submitted to the site for her review before she gets to have fun with them.  We are doing this out of an abundance of caution and also to make sure she gets to enjoy being a teenager.  She’ll contribute as frequently as she wishes and please feel free to let us know any questions you might have for her.  I’m excited to share my space with her and hope she continues her love of reading far in to the future.

Her first review will go live at midnight Central so come back and check out what she has to say about a title her mom picked up for her while we were at RT.  If any of you met me there her mom was my pusher (helping me be a bit more assertive) and probably gave out more of my cards than I did.  I’m working on getting their family to all join the site as contributors so you might see more posts like this in the future.

Again I can’t thank her enough for letting M join the site to give us some input in to what a teenage girl thinks of some of the YA titles out there.

About the books:
Taking Shots:
In Toni Aleo’s exhilarating debut, the first in a series featuring the hockey hunks of the Nashville Assassins, a reformed bad boy helps a charming, willful woman face off against the demons of her past.

No matter how hard she tries, Eleanor Fisher never thinks she’s good enough, from her job to her weight to her love life. After enduring years of abuse at the hands of an ex-boyfriend, Elli has been drifting through life in a daze. Until, that is, she meets Shea Adler on a promotional shoot for the NHL’s Nashville Assassins. Before Elli knows what’s happening, the gorgeous Shea breaks the ice and shatters her world.

A brilliant athlete inside the rink, Shea Adler is tired of the life he’s living outside of it: the girls, the money, the drinking. But everything changes when he meets Elli. After laying eyes on this feisty, witty, beautiful woman, he feels like he’s just taken the hardest hit of his life. No matter how skeptical she is, Shea knows they are meant to be together—if only he can convince Elli to put her insecurities aside throw her insecurities out the window before she misses out on a shot at love.

Trying to Score:
In a captivating novel of hockey and healing hearts, the newest member of the Nashville Assassins pulls a power play to make things right with the one that got away.

Fallon Parker’s dream has always been to turn her family’s wine company into a runaway success and eventually to start a cellar of her own. Since graduating from college, she has worked relentlessly to make that dream a reality, especially after taking a chance on love—and losing. By the time Fallon becomes an official sponsor of the Nashville Assassins, she feels like all her hard work is finally paying off. And then the man who broke her heart skates back into her life.

On the ice, Lucas Brooks is the NHL’s leading scorer—at least when he’s not in the box. Off the ice, he’s a mess, with all his anger and misery bottled up inside. He threw away the most important person in his life and has regretted it ever since. But when Lucas returns to Nashville in a trade, he’s determined to convince Fallon that he’s a changed man. The attraction is still there. The tension is electrifying. But the odds are stacked against them—especially after Lucas finds out that Fallon has been keeping a devastating secret.

Empty Net:
The chiseled men of the Nashville Assassins can make anything happen when they go all-out for the women they want—even turn a one-night stand into a happily ever after.

Audrey Parker is up against the boards. She’s stuck in a job she hates and pining for a total jerk. Meanwhile, her sister Fallon is moving out and getting married to hockey star Lucas Brooks. Where is Audrey’s Prince Charming? Nothing she does has ever seemed to be good enough for any of the men in her life. Audrey’s about to hit rock bottom . . . until she wakes up next to Tate Odder.

The thrill of moving up from the minors to the Nashville Assassins was a welcome distraction. But not even becoming the first rookie goalie to tally three shutouts in the Stanley Cup Finals alleviates the pain. With the loss of his parents and sister weighing as heavily on his soul as ever, Tate Odder can’t keep pretending he’s okay. That’s when he meets smart, sexy Audrey. Her gentle warmth and quirky sense of humor make him feel whole for the first time in too long. But to stay that way forever, Tate must find a way to accept his past and learn to live for love.

BLUE LINES:
Opposites do more than just attract in Toni Aleo’s latest Nashville Assassins novel about a very bad boy and the good girl he can’t resist.

The instant Piper Allen sees Erik Titov, she wants him—wants his rock-hard body, sure, but the strength and mystery that lie behind that superstar hockey jock demeanor, too. So when he sidles up to her at a bar and slinks his arm around her waist, she’s lost. What follows is the wildest night of her life . . . followed by inevitable heartbreak the next morning. And then, a few weeks later, a very big surprise: two blue lines on a pregnancy test.

Only a check to the head could make Erik fall for a nice girl like Piper. But since their crazy-sexy night together, he’s been trying to forget about her alluring body by falling into bed with every woman in Nashville, and it’s not working. So when Piper shows up at his house with a baby-bomb to drop, it doesn’t take much for Erik to suggest the nuclear option: marriage. While it’s supposed to be all for show, the second they say “I do,” the ice between them starts to melt into sizzling steam.

The Blurb:

In this emotional and powerfully erotic tale of love and redemption, a tender vicar’s daughter and a tortured war hero discover that sin may be their only salvation.

When Mary Smith’s corrupt, debt-ridden brother drags her to a seedy pub to sell her virtue to the highest bidder, Alasdair Thornham leaps to the rescue. Of course the marquess is far from perfect husband material. Although he is exceedingly handsome, with a perfect, strong body, chiseled jaw, and piercing green eyes, Alasdair is also too fond of opium, preferring delirium to reality. Still, he has come to Mary’s aid, and now she intends to return the favor. She will show him that he is not evil, just troubled.

Mary was a damsel in need of a hero, but Alasdair’s plan is shortsighted. He never foresaw her desire to save him from himself. Alasdair is quite at home in his private torment, until this angel proves that a heart still beats in his broken soul. The devil may have kept her from hell, but will Mary’s good intentions lead them back to the brink—or to heaven in each other’s arms?

Includes a special message from the editor, as well as excerpts from these Loveswept titles: Along Came Trouble, The Notorious Lady Anne, and Unforgettable.
