Spotlight – The Reluctant First Lady – Venita Ellick

New Women’s Fiction That’s Stirring Up a National Debate

by Venita Ellick

About the Author:
Venita Ellick was
fated to be a writer. She was named for a character in a book her mother was
reading at the time of the birth. As a young girl, she spent so much time in
libraries that librarians would save books for her almost daily visits. She
began writing stories in the first grade, which her mother

patiently read. The intervention of a career as an educator and raising three
sons delayed her focus on writing, but she has now completed three novels. The
Reluctant First Lady is her fourth.

Mistress of Mellyn by Victoria Holt and Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
captivated her as a teenager. The power and imagery of the printed word made
her wonder what each heroine was thinking and feeling. She wanted to be the woman
with the cape and hood standing on the edge of the cliff with the wind whipping
around her. The mysteries that could be found in stories fascinated her and are
echoed in The Reluctant First Lady.

Ellick draws on her experiences as a wife, mother, teacher, and principal to
create her characters. Her sense of humor and recognition of the absurd and
often whimsical nature of life have allowed her to capture her characters’
lives with authenticity and emotional resonance.

Venita and her husband David have experience as a two-career couple. They live
on an island in the state of Washington.

The Reluctant First Lady asks –

“Just how much should a woman sacrifice for the person she loves?”

Ashley Taylor has been straightforward with her husband, the president-elect of the United States. She supported his candidacy, but she has no intention of assuming the traditional role of First Lady—a position she describes as “First Hostess.” Instead, she will resume her own career as head of one of the largest art museums in New York. The aftermath of her decision triggers reactions from the public, news commentators, late night comedians, and other political factions. While Ashley and Michael wrestle with saving their marriage and preserving their professional lives, the country debates whether the role of First Lady is a necessity, how the media influences the lives of public figures, and how much a woman should sacrifice for the person she loves.

From Chapter 3 of The Reluctant First Lady

Applause and pandemonium broke out on the other side of the curtain, indicating Michael had reached the end of his speech.

A stage manager nodded and, with Ashley and the twins leading the way, followed by the vice president- elect, his wife, and family, she stepped onto the stage and into the bright lights. The noise from the crowd grew in intensity as each of them came into view. They all walked forward to stand beside Michael, Ashley and the twins to his left; Robert Hughes, Catherine, and their children to his right.

The chaos and elation vibrating through the crowd was intoxicating. Cheers from a wildly exuberant audience and music blocked out what individuals were saying, but the camaraderie of those on the stage was evidenced by their smiles, hugs, and claps on the back. Before the world, she and Michael looked like the perfect couple. Michael pulled his family, plus Richard and his family, toward him while photographers snapped pictures of this historic event.

Amid the excitement, it almost went unnoticed that a reporter shouted a question at Ashley. She ignored him, hoping he would go away.

The reporter repeated his question. “Mrs. Taylor, what causes do you intend to champion during the next four years in the White House?”

Ashley winced inwardly, but no outward expression marred her serene expression. She had a choice. She could tell the truth or continue to go along with the lie. Damn it. She’d been dodging questions like this for months about what special causes she intended to champion if her husband were elected. In fact, she’d become a master of evasion, not something she was proud of. Unquestionably the smartest thing to do would be to give the same canned response she’d been giving throughout the campaign. It would be a lie, all of it. But then she wouldn’t be accused of rocking the boat, a boat, she might add, that she knew was taking on a lot of water.

She was tired of being evasive. She was sick to death of lying by omission. Michael’s managers had convinced her that he wouldn’t be elected if she declared her intentions. But, Michael had been elected. Was it possible that she was making more of this than necessary?

She leaned toward the reporter and his microphone and began speaking in a quiet, clear voice.

“First, I’d like to thank everyone here and at home for their incredible support throughout the campaign. I’m extremely proud of Michael and have always believed he’d be a great leader and a great president. The American people have chosen wisely and well this day. As for me, with the election over, I’ll be returning to my job as director of the Cameron Museum of Art in New York. It’s never been my intention to serve as the First Lady. Over half of the families in our country are two-career families. Our family isn’t any different. In fact . . .”

Ashley felt Michael’s hand on her elbow. “Ashley, just smile and wave. We’re getting off of the stage now.”

Make Me Burn

Book 2, Fireborne Series

Kindle  Nook  Samhain Publishing

Aziza Jane Stewart is the last of the Fireborne, and so far it’s been nothing but a curse, destroying her family and putting everyone she loves in danger. Now she’s on a quest to find her brother’s portion of the power that flows in her veins and track down the murdering Jiniyr who are a threat to her loved ones.

She and her Enforcer lover Brandon are officially “in a relationship”, but she’s still torn between two men who both set her on fire. Brandon’s duties are driving a wedge between them, and her need to protect her Jinn guardian isn’t helping. Exiled and stripped of his powers, Ram is focused on satisfying his darkest urges…and tempting her to come along for the ride.

When Aziza discovers Brandon has been keeping news of ritualistic murders from her and the evidence is pointing at Ram, all bets are off. It’s time to find her own answers, embrace what’s inside her and make her own rules, damn the consequences.

Warning: Explicit content, and even more danger and heavy drinking than book one. Fetish clubs and role-play, whips and chains, voyeurism and exhibitionism. More inappropriate use of supernatural powers for deviant activities. In other words, burning down the house.

It’s almost time. All you have to do is let go.

No.  If she let go she would fall.

Adrenaline made every muscle in Aziza’s taut, outstretched body tremble and her grip tighten instinctively on the silk fabric, the only thing keeping her from crashing to the floor far below.

Her mind was flooded by the memory of falling backward carelessly and plummeting from Penn’s roof with her arms wide. Though the world had gone black, before she realized it, Ram had saved her from crashing into the unforgiving ground.

He wouldn’t save her this time. He wouldn’t need to. Things were different now. She was different.

A small handful of people standing beneath her craned their necks, waiting in absolute silence to see what would happen next. They wouldn’t save her either, but she had their undivided attention.

Show them how to live. Let go…or I will.

Pushing away that disturbing thought, Aziza listened for the cue of the music through the pounding of blood in her ears. When she heard it, she relaxed her pose and let go of the silk. Her body dropped, twirling down, the floor rising up to meet her so swiftly that to the untrained eye it may have seemed accidental. But she was in complete control. That was the point. She wasn’t falling. She was in control.

Of this, if not her love life. If not of the Jinn or the Niyr or her emotions. Of this, if nothing else.

The silk that had been coiled purposefully around her waist was now held in both her hands as she swung her legs upward and wrapped the fabric around her ankles. The swaying rigging helped as she used her body’s weight and momentum to spin in a dizzying circle through the air.

The music she’d brought to practice on the aerial silks—a club-style remix of “Come Josephine in My Flying Machine”—reminded her with every precise movement who she was. The vocals were haunting, the beat hard and invigorating.

It was how she felt. Just a little…off. Not completely herself. She was missing something.

Brandon. She wavered on the silks before pushing him out of her mind. The song. Focus on the song.

The tune from her nightmarish dreams had now become a sort of anthem, a melody meant to keep her mindful of what she’d done…what she’d been told she still needed to do. The more she listened to it, the more familiar it became. Not only from the dream, but from a childhood memory that remained frustratingly out of reach. Sometimes she saw flashes of laughter and her father’s smiling, bearded face, but nothing else.

She never forgot anything. Every word she’d heard spoken and every moment in her life was filed away and easily accessible in her mind. Even the memories she’d rather not keep—like the lifeless eyes of last night’s victim—would always be with her. So why was this apparently happy memory eluding her?

Her arms and legs straightened as they’d been trained to do, slowing her spin and pulling her body up with a strength she’d never had before, a strength that had only grown in the last few weeks, giving her this newfound agility.

Aziza pushed her legs back against the silks, her body curved and breasts jutting out like the busty carving on the prow of an ancient ship, her skin warm, more from excitement than exertion. Forgetting her pain and fear, she let herself fall forward once more, loving the momentary sensation of weightlessness as she did flip after perfectly controlled flip until she landed on the padded mat and the music came to an end.

Back on solid ground again, she sighed in disappointment.

The smattering of applause made her grin in spite of her dark mood, as her instructor, Anthony, left the others who’d been watching her and came to her side.

“Either I’m a miracle worker, which you are perfectly free to profess to anyone within hearing distance,” he said with the self-effacing British charm that was so much a part of his personality, “or you, Aziza Jane Stewart, are a prodigy. One week at your American school and not much more time here, and already you’ve given our seasoned performers some true competition. That was inspired. Are you quite sure you won’t join in this season’s student performance?”

Aziza laughed, placing her hand on his arm as she bent down to grab her towel and water bottle. “Thanks, Anthony, but I’d rather be in the audience than in the spotlight. It’s the best place to watch your show.”

“I am glad of that.” Anthony cupped her shoulder in a friendly gesture before dropping his hand awkwardly. “Though my joy is tempered with the knowledge that my charm is not what it once was. Both you and your handsome friend have turned me down again.”

Handsome friend. Her instructor was no more immune to Ram’s charms than anyone else in this city. He drew people to him like moths to a dangerous flame. From what little she’d seen, the Jinn had the market cornered in the sultry and breathtakingly beautiful department. And Ram was a prime example of his species, even without his powers.

“Ram was here today?” She looked around, attempting a casual air, as if she weren’t dying to see him. To warn him about the murders. To be near him. Usually she passed him on her way in or saw him watching her practice, but she hadn’t caught a glimpse of him yet this morning.

She’d talked him into coming with her a couple of weeks ago when she saw him at Underbridge. Dared him, really, since “talking” implied a conversation between two people and Ram tried to avoid those whenever possible. She’d had to do something. His body had healed but the rest of him was taking longer. Whether he admitted it or not, he was hurting and she owed him.

Luckily, the dare had paid off. He still wasn’t back to his old self—with her, at least—but as soon as he arrived here, so many people had fallen all over themselves to be near him, she wasn’t surprised when he came with her the next time. And the next. Ram had trained as a warrior most of his life, and he had enviable skill and control over his body—and enough arrogance and ego to appreciate the way everyone here admired it. Admired him.

“He’s still here.” Anthony tilted his head, his smile broadening. “I understand he and another man are having an impromptu sparring session in one of the training rooms. I believe that’s why it’s so empty in here. Shall we go take a look?”

Smiling back, she nodded and followed him through the grand room crisscrossed with ropes and wires, carefully staying out of the way of a young man in a harness who was running along the wall.

The Hangar was a large industrial building in Greenwich, a little bit hard to get to but more than worth it for Aziza. The Aircraft Circus held performances throughout London, and The Hangar was where they all worked and trained in aerial silks and trapeze, among other things. With four studios, acrobatics, yoga and flexibility classes, along with these one-on-one sessions, this was the best place to get the kind of workout she needed. One where she was her only competition, and all her battles were internal. It was her meditation, her workout. And it was by far the preferable option to werewolf boot camp.

Thank God she’d discovered this place—this very human, no-magic-needed-for-feats-of-daring place. When she’d marked “running away to join the circus” off her bucket list back in Texas so long ago, she’d been sad to leave the small class behind. Because of her memory—the woman performing on an aerial hoop beneath a hot air balloon—but also because of the atmosphere. The acceptance…the feeling of joy and family. The trust.

When they arrived in a crowded hallway, Anthony steered her through the huddled group so she could look inside.

“Speaking of perfection,” a woman behind her muttered. “You ever seen anything tastier than those two fit devils grappling shirtless?”

Aziza was too busy catching her breath to answer.

Ram and a man she didn’t recognize moved together in a dance-like circle on the exercise mat, close enough to either kiss or beat each other bloody as they ducked kicks, dodged punches and held each other’s arms down. The spectacle was breathtakingly erotic.

Her Jinn was still godlike and beautiful, but the word “pretty” was no longer entirely accurate. His time in exile had hardened him, made him look more like the warrior he was than the mischievous, deviant devil she’d first met. He’d cut his hair close to his head in a militant look and his side still carried the slashing scar from the wound he’d suffered that fateful night. The solid cuff on his wrist that she knew couldn’t be removed glinted as he threw a punch, reminding her that his actions had left more than physical scars behind.

He was stronger, his lean muscles more defined than they had been a few weeks ago. When she first met him she’d thought, despite his behavior, he looked like an angel. Now, he was all man.

Ram bent his knees and rolled, a move that should have knocked his opponent on his ass, but instead the man jumped with a laugh and winked at the audience. “Fool me once…”

A collective sigh echoed through the crowd, and Aziza wasn’t any more immune than they were to the smiling stranger. She’d been surrounded by hot men for months, and yet this man still managed to startle her with his attractiveness. It was as if someone had taken all the best qualities of her hunky entourage and poured them into one cool, lean package that reminded her a little bit of a young, short-haired Lenny Kravitz.

And she’d had an all-out, posters-in-her-high-school-locker crush on Lenny.

The man had obviously been getting a workout because his light-brown skin was gleaming. He wore low-riding black sweatpants and nothing else, and what she’d at first assumed were tattoos, on closer inspection merged into a series of scars across his chest, raised marks that had form and had obviously been put there on purpose. Designed. Scarification? He had small-gauge piercings in his ears as well. They only made him look more masculine and dangerous. So did his eight-pack abs.

He’s different.

In this all-new novel from the author of After Hours and Unbound, a woman with a rocky past finds romance in the last place she’d ever expect... Annie Goodhouse doesn’t need to be warned about bad boys; good sense and an abusive ex have given her plenty of reasons to play it safe. But when she steps into her new role as outreach librarian for Cousins Correctional Facility, no amount of good sense can keep her mind—or eyes—off inmate Eric Collier. Eric doesn’t claim to be innocent of the crime that landed him in prison. In fact, he’d do it again if that’s what it took to keep his family safe. Loyalty and force are what he knows. But meeting Annie makes him want to know more. When Eric begins courting Annie through letters, they embark on a reckless, secret romance—a forbidden fantasy that neither imagines could ever be real...until early parole for Eric changes everything, and forces them both to face a past they can’t forget, and a desire they can’t deny. Praise for Cara McKenna and her novels “Cara McKenna is my go-to author for gritty, hot love stories full of honest emotion.”—Victoria Dahl, USA Today bestselling author “McKenna writes dark, lush, erotic romance.”—Heroes and Heartbreakers “Sweet, smoking hot, standout erotic romance.”—Beth Kery, New York Times bestselling author Before becoming a purveyor of smart erotic romance, Cara McKenna worked as a lousy barista, a decent designer, and an over-enthusiastic penguin handler. She loves writing sexy, character-driven stories about strong-willed men and women who keep each other on their toes...and bring one another to their knees. Cara now writes full-time and lives north of Boston with her bearded husband. When she’s not trapped in her own head, she can usually be found in the kitchen, the coffee shop, or jogging around the nearest duck-filled pond.

This book was not 100% comfortable and it isn’t meant to be.  It was raw, thought provoking and sensual as hell.  I found myself torn about how to rate this but I found that while I wasn’t completely comfortable with everything in the story I found it to be honest and made me think about my own prejudices about felons even as I know I personally would gladly commit a felony should I ever meet up with someone from my past that still has an impact on my life more than 20 years later.  I’m going to make this review fairly short and try to keep things as general as possible because I think if one spills to much about the story it ruins some of what made me think hard not only as I read this story but after I read it.

Annie is in many ways a truly naive, innocent woman.  Sure she’s had a relationship or two but even with the abusive last boyfriend she’s still incredibly sheltered.  As she starts to work around inmates once a week the blinders begin to come off but she still falls in to a secretive relationship with an inmate that pushes her boundaries and makes her want something that she isn’t completely prepared for.  I liked her strength but also found her to be a bit too wet behind the ears for me.  I understood her motivation but at the same time there is a part of me that was screaming “WAKE UP GIRLIE!!!!  Grow up and live outside your head!”  Luckily for her she ends up with someone that has good intentions and really does feel something for her.  I think her strongest point in this story is her belief in him and need to see him safe.

Eric was an intriguing character that weaves a masterful spell with his words as raw as they are.  I found myself incredibly drawn to him as we find out more about him but finding out why he was in prison and the details surrounding his crime definitely cemented my understanding of this strong yet sensitive soul.  He’s raw, dirty and at the same time has such a strong sense of duty to people that he really sacrifices everything for.  I appreciated his ownership of what he did but I also wanted to scream at him for putting himself in jeopardy out of a sense of duty to someone who really didn’t comprehend the cost he would endure.  He’s very compelling and you will find yourself drawn to learn more about this complicated man from not only his writings but his choices after he gets out for parole.

Again this isn’t an easy read but I’m glad I took the chance on it.  I was pushed a bit with some of the themes in the story but ultimately it made me think and perhaps look at some things a bit differently.

Special thanks to and Intermix for giving me the chance to read this one in exchange for my honest review.  I now have a new author to glom so….  😉

Guest Post – Vivian Arend – Contest!

April 1, 2014 Uncategorized 0

Please welcome Vivian Arend to the blog in support of Copper King which is a part of an amazing box set called Alphas After Dark.  I admit to saying “GIMMEE!!!” when Vivian first teased me with a bit of the cover for this one and when I found out it had a bear shifter… well…  let’s just say she knew I wanted it!  Check out more information below including a fun excerpt and a great contest!

When I started writing, it was all about sharing the things I loved. Venturing into the great outdoors with shifters seemed a natural thing to do. Something fun happened along the way—an entire world of friendly, interesting and involved people showed up. It’s been five years now since I discovered the Granite Lake Wolves, and from there I’ve traveled to meet their friends in Whitehorse, and beyond. I’m not ready to leave, only those particular series weren’t meant to go on any longer.

Thus I’m opening the door to the North in a new way. The Takhini Shifters are novellas set in the Granite Lake and Takhini Wolves world. Some of the heroes and heroines you’ll meet will be new, some vaguely familiar from their appearances in previous books, but you don’t have to have read the earlier books to enjoy these stand-alone stories.

In this first book, I bring you two characters who are also in DIAMOND DUST. There they are already a couple—COPPER KING explains how they got together. Writing Jim and Lillie was so much fun. I hope you enjoy reading their story as much as I enjoyed writing it!

ALSO—this is the even more exciting part—I’m releasing COPPER KING as a part of a box set with 8 other novellas! ALPHAS AFTER DARK gives you a chance to catch up on my shifter world AND try some other fabulous paranormal and contemporary books. Something for everyone for .99!! (I’ve read a few of the other stories already and OH BOY, you want this!!)

Want to hear a little more? Read on for an excerpt from COPPER KING!

Three things make billionaire Jim Halcyon’s to-do list: women, work…and more women. It’s a perfect agenda for a rich shifter who has no problem letting his inner grizzly out to play. From the bright lights of Vegas, to the sophisticated action of New York—he’s got the money and the power to do anything he wants.

Anything, except resist the lure of Lady Luck, an ancient copper coin he gambles yearly to possess. Jim is determined to regain control of the pretty penny, and damn if he’ll let any bit of eye candy distract him from his goal. Not even the mesmerizing woman in the middle of the casino floor with the shimmering hair and enormous green eyes.

With a life-changing move ahead of her, Lillie’s finagled a temporary layover en route to her future. She’s got five days to soak in new experiences, and while Vegas is too big and shiny and loud for her shy bear self, she’s eager to do this up right. It’s the last chance she’s got to let her hair down.
Until his challenge begins, Jim is more than willing to oblige Lillie’s wish for a final fling. Only Lady Luck has some twists of fate planned for them both…

Exclusive Excerpt:

Jim Halcyon was in lust.

Or maybe obsessed was a better term. Whatever it was, he couldn’t pull his gaze away. Her bright coppery tones reflected the overhead lights, sparkling back as she rotated before him. Soft edges, infinite value—not because she was so rare, but because of what she represented.

This time, she wasn’t getting away from him.

“You’re the easiest person in the world to distract,” Damon Black taunted.

Jim instinctively closed his fingers over the coin lying in the palm of his hand, tempted to slam the fist he’d formed into the pretty-boy face of one of the only shifters brave enough to mock him.

She’s been looking for the perfect man. She found two.

When Rachel Riley sacrificed a life in Eden to protect the O’Kanes, she earned her place in the powerful Sector Four gang. But the former crime princess is tired of being everyone’s sweet little sister . It’s time for her to get wild, to embrace her fantasies as only an O’Kane can—with a delicious exiled soldier and the gang’s wickedly sinful tattoo artist.
A saint…
Lorenzo Cruz is a warrior, taught by his commanding officers in Eden that involvement equals distraction. Emotion is a liability, and desire a sin.  In Sector Four, he finds decadence, shameless sex—and his own dark urges. No battle strategy prepared him for how Rachel makes his heart race…or the way his rival for her affections sets his blood on fire.
…and a sinner.
Ace Santana has a dirty reputation and a mind to match, especially where his new lovers are concerned.  He’s eager to help Cruz embrace his dominant side, and to explore the lines between pleasure and pain with Rachel. But corrupting them quickly becomes an obsession, a need he can’t deny—and a love he never imagined.
Three hearts on the line means a hundred ways their ménage a trois could go wrong. After all, even O’Kanes do forever two-by-two.  One of them could be the missing piece that makes them all whole…or a temporary diversion destined for a broken heart.

All Noelle Cunningham has ever wanted is a life beyond–beyond the walls of Eden, where only the righteous are allowed to remain, and beyond her stiflingly restrictive existence as a councilman’s daughter. But only ruins lie outside the City, remnants of a society destroyed by solar storms decades earlier.

The sectors surrounding Eden house the corrupt, the criminal–men like Jasper McCray, bootlegger and cage fighter. Jas clawed his way up from nothing to stand at the right hand of Sector Four’s ruthless leader, and he’ll defend the O’Kane gang with his life. But no fight ever prepared him for the exiled City girl who falls at his feet.
Her innocence is undeniable, but so is their intense sexual attraction, and soon they’re crossing every boundary Noelle barely knew she had. But if she wants to belong to Jas, first she’ll have to open herself to a world where passion is power, and freedom is found in submission. Kobo

He has only one rule: he won’t share her.
In Bren’s arms, Six is finally free to let go. But his obsession with the man who made him a monster could destroy the fragile connection they’ve forged, and cost him the one thing that makes him feel human–her love. Kobo

In Response to Lynn Shepherd – A reader’s view

February 24, 2014 Uncategorized 0

I’m sorry that I woke up today to read a post on the Huffington Post that insults both authors and readers alike…  I wanted to have a nice day and yet this post has succeeded in pissing this avid reader off!  I tried to let it go but the more I thought about it the more pissed off I became so we are going to rant for a minute…

In your post you state that Ms Rowling should quit writing if she really cares about it.  My response is to say “Um, no maybe just maybe someone that is showing their jealousy of someone else’s success should quit.”  Obviously you feel that since she’s had her success she should stop but if that happened in other fields we would have missed out on so much.  Should someone like Spielberg, Shakespeare, Beethoven, Van Gogh, Renoir and Robert Heinlein have stopped once they got one successful item?  I don’t think so.  I don’t think anyone should stop doing something once they succeed a single time.  I think if you love something then you should be able to do it as long as you want and as long as it doesn’t hurt others in a physical way.  Having a successful author continue to publish work does not hurt other writers but can help bring more people in to reading as a whole which in turn can help authors.  I don’t know of a single reader who only reads a single author and ignores all others.  If there are some out there they are people I have never met but I don’t begrudge them their viewpoint.  I’d love to meet one so I can see why they are so focused to that single view and understand what makes them tick.  I’m pretty much a reader that is just happy to have someone be willing to share their gift with me.  As many people that know me can attest, I’m ohhhhhhhh BOOOOOOKKKKK!!!  WANTS THEM ALL>>>>  GIMMEEEE kind of reader.

Now to the second point that really hit me hard,  how dare you try to shame the adults who read and loved the Harry Potter series.  I gladly admit to being one of them and even admit to making my first stop when I got to Canada a bookstore so I could get the British version of the Philosopher’s Stone.  Yes I am that big of a book nerd…  I don’t care what age you are or what you read as long as you are reading.  To have an author try to say shame on someone for reading something is just shameful because those of us that are fans of the written word should be encouraging people to read not trying to shame them for what they choose to.  My personal thought is as long as you are reading something you are expanding your mind and horizons even if you might be reading something that I did not like I will not shame you for doing so.  I love to read and supporting the community as a whole is more important to me than trying to tell someone what they can or cannot read.  If you cannot see beyond your jealousy and see that what you are saying is more harmful than helpful, well I just feel sorry for your narrow-mindedness.

As for me I choose to read stories from authors that support the community as a whole and have the presence of mind to understand that while it is ok for them to envy another’s success they should not choose to let that envy color their thinking to the point that Lynn Shepherd has.  To insult the writing community and readers to the extent that she has with her thoughtless post is just something sad to see and I hope that she looks back on this incident and learns something from it.

Ok…  rant over and now on to more fun stories with authors that hopefully understand that one person’s success doesn’t taint the industry as a whole and that a reader grabbing any book is better than no readers at all.

Paperback Release 1/7/13 – Mystic Cowboy!!! 4 Stars

January 7, 2014 Uncategorized 0

I am sharing this old review that I wrote for Mystic Cowboy to help Sarah celebrate the paperback release!!  Come join me in loving the men of White Sandy and our need for more of these stories… *cough* NOBODY *cough* (Hint hint..  we are beyond ready for NOBODY!!!)

Mystic Cowboy

I have to start this review by taking a moment to appreciate the cover of this book.  I mean “YUM!!”   Who wouldn’t want a Rebel for their very own?

Madeline has decided to make a major change in her life by agreeing to be the resident doctor at a Lakota reservation.  She’s unaware of the issues unique to work on a reservation and the fact that money or cooperation are non-existent between the white and Indian worlds.   Reality hits her in the face very quickly as she sees the condition the clinic is in, the lack of supplies, the sheer volume of patients, and the utter lack of funding.  Luckily she has some money of her own and starts to bring much needed supplies and help to the area.  Maddie runs in to Rebel when she is treating a gunshot victim and while immediately drawn to this fine specimen of manhood she is also a bit wary of the mystery he keeps around himself.  I liked watching her figure out how to balance her need for Western medicine and Rebel’s need to preserve the Lakota way of life.  She finds out very quickly that he is more than what he seems but that no matter how different their life-styles are they are meant to be together.

Rebel is just an amazing person.  He helps everyone on the reservation with groceries, life, money, and everything in his heart.  My heart broke as you find out what has made him withdraw in to himself and lose a bit of his way.  His grandfather, Albert, has been an amazing influence on the man he has become and plays a vital role in making him understand the man he needs to be.  He feels conflicted during most of this book by what society seems to think of him as an Indian and what he wants as a real man.  His need to immerse himself fully in the Lakota way of life doesn’t completely fulfill him and watching as he reconciles his need for Maddie with his shame of what his culture has sunk to was interesting to see.  Sarah does a great job making the conflicts realistic as most of these prejudices between the white and Indian worlds do exist if you have ever lived near a reservation.  Rebel is sexy as hell though and his need for Maddie just shines through all the conflict.  She heals his soul and gives him the partner he never thought he would have.  Let me tell you the skinny dipping scene alone is worth the time and money for this book.  I had to fan myself a few times as I read it.

Please take a chance on this novel as I don’t think you will regret it.  I am hoping that Sarah will give us Nobody’s story and more about others on the reservation.  I mean I can’t pass up more chances to read about Rebel and Maddie plus the ending with Nobody made me sniffle a bit…  Not truly a bad thing but he’s just something else.  I want to know more about him and why he is the way he is….

Special thanks to Sarah for giving me a copy of this book to read.  I truly enjoyed it and this gift did not influence my rating in any way.  I just loved the characters and the world she brought to life.

Guest Post – Stacy Gail – Cookie Monster – Contest!

November 29, 2013 Uncategorized 5

Please join me in welcoming Stacy to the blog!!

She wrote the wonderful Starting From Scratch that I recently reviewed here.  Anyway…  I have enjoyed many of her stories and invited her to share with us anything that came in to her head…

 Cookie Monster

Before I begin, I’d like to thank Steph for giving me a chance to chat about STARTING FROM SCRATCH, a military homecoming-themed holiday novella.  It’s one half of Carina Press’s GIFTS OF HONOR, with the other half comprised of Rebecca Crowley’s wonderful story, HERO’S HOMECOMING. Happy holidays, everyone!

When I first outlined STARTING FROM SCRATCH, I decided to make the heroine, Lucy, a baker.  Why?  I needed something familiar about her that would trigger a response in the amnesiac hero, Sully.  I chose the scent of cookies, coupled with a never-ending craving for them, to represent his subconscious desire to find his way back to the woman he loved.  And it made sense.  This was a holiday novella, so naturally cookies would be an everyday part of the background.

Sounds simple, right? Yeah.  This is how it actually went.

Day 1: I name this latest project A Craving for Cookies (Harlequin later changed it to Starting from Scratch).  Opening scene is in a kitchen with spiced cupcakes and mounds of cream cheese frosting… Mmmmm.  Frosting.  I spend the evening baking. You know, to get in the spirit of things. Yay, new project!

Day 3: Research-mode.  I had to find the right kind of holiday cookie.  Something unique yet memorable.  An ordinary Tollhouse cookie wouldn’t cut it.  I shuffle through about a hundred cookie recipes on Pinterest and try some of these recipes out. For research.

Day 9:  My jeans are tight.  Must’ve shrunk in the wash.  There’s a scene where Lucy’s decorating sugar cookie cutouts.  That sounds like fun.  I should bake some…

Day 16: My feet are gaining weight.  I know this, because my day job is a figure skating coach, and I just busted a skate lace and am now oozing out of my skates.

Day 21:  The end of the book is in sight, and there’s a gingerbread house scene.  I have to describe the rich aromas of vanilla, ginger and so much sugar it can be tasted with every breath….  God, I want sugar so freaking much.  But no.  No more baking for me.  After all, why bake WHEN I HAVE THIS ENTIRE BAG OF OREO DOUBLE STUFS ALL TO MYSELF???

Day 23: I have no clothes that fit anymore. I consider wearing a bed sheet to work.  Togas were once cool, right? But I don’t really care about my wardrobe, because I finished my holiday novella! I should celebrate with cookies…

I’ll admit it—I may have lost my mind and turned into a cookie monster when I wrote STARTING FROM SCRATCH, but I gained something too.  Weight.  Lots and lots of weight. What’s more, I don’t have a single regret about it, but I really do wish togas would come back into style. I’d rock that look.

QUESTION: Have you ever read a “food” scene in a book that inspires you to eat? (Harry Potter’s Hogwarts feasts usually did me in).

Christmas is the perfect time to start from scratch

Lieutenant Sully Jax saved his unit during an IED attack, but he couldn’t save his marriage. He can’t even remember it. Recovered from his injuries, he’s come home to the family and friends he knows—and an ex-wife who’s a stranger to him.

Lucy Crabtree was heartbroken last Christmas when Sully announced his plan to go on one last tour of duty, and devastated when he asked for a divorce after he awoke in the hospital with no memory of her. She’s finally moving on from her hurt and from losing the man she loved more than anything, and her cookie-baking business is taking off just in time for the holidays. But now Sully’s back, and she can’t deny she still loves him. But how can she trust her heart to someone who breaks it every time she sees him?

Sully might not remember Lucy, but something inside won’t let her go. With every bite of her cookies, he finds a new love for Lucy, and he soon realizes he wants to rebuild his life… with her by his side.
