In this emotional and sexy New Adult debut from Brighton Walsh, the only thing more frightening than commitment is hope…

Aspiring chef Cade Maxwell is immediately, viscerally attracted to Winter Jacobson. But it’s not her mouthwatering curves he’s drawn to—it’s the strange emptiness in her eyes. When Cade saves her from a drunken customer with grabby hands, he’s shocked at her response…

Winter doesn’t need Cade’s help. After a lifetime of getting by on her own, she’s happy to rely on herself. She’s exactly seventy-six days away from graduating college, and if she can hold it together that long, she’ll finally be able to rise above the crappy hand she was dealt.

But now, every time she turns around, Cade is there, ready to push her, smile at her, distract her from her plans. Winter knows she can’t afford to open up—especially to a man she’s terrified to actually want…

Excerpt:

cade

“Okay, now add the flour, but—” It’s too late, a puff of white exploding in Winter’s face before I can get the words out or reach to flip the switch. “You need to turn the mixer to low.”

She spins around, her cheeks covered in random white spots, some of the flour dusting her hair. “You couldn’t say that before, ‘Now add the flour’?” Her voice is low, her eyes narrowed, and I take a step back.

“Well, yeah, I guess I could’ve, but I just sort of figured you’d know enough not to add loose flour to a wildly spinning mixer.”

“Oh, you figured I’d know enough for that, huh? Even after I told you I’ve never made cookies before? Even then?”

She’s advancing on me now, and I shouldn’t be retreating like a scared animal. I have more than a foot on her, a hundred-plus pounds, but she looks pissed. And that glint in her eye tells me she’s up to something. I glance down at her hand, seeing a measuring cup half filled with flour, and I realize what she’s going to do a split-second before she does, but not soon enough to dodge it.

A cloud of white powder hits me straight in the face, and I cough as I inhale some. Wiping away the dust from my eyes, I say, “I can’t believe you did that.”

“Oh, well, I just figured you’d know enough to duck.” She shrugs and offers me a saccharine smile.

“I don’t think you want to start this with me, baby.”

“In case you missed the flour in your face a second ago, I already started it, baby.”

I stare her down, then reach over, grabbing the bowl of melted chocolate—my mom’s secret ingredient in her cookies—and dip my fingers into it. Winter narrows her eyes at me and takes a step back. “Don’t you dare.”

“Where you goin’? I thought you wanted to get messy.”

“No, I wanted you to get messy. I didn’t have a choice with this,” she says as she gestures to where the flour hit her. She darts her eyes down to the bowl of chocolate, then back up to my face. “Don’t, Cade. You’re going to get me dirty, and I have to be at work soon.”

“You maybe should’ve thought about that before you threw a scoop of flour in my face.” I don’t wait for her response before I smear the chocolate down her cheek to her jaw, then all the way down her neck and into the deep V of her shirt, stopping when I feel the swell of her breasts. “Whoops.”

“You did not just do that.”

“Looks like I did.” I shrug, putting the bowl back on the counter before I lick the chocolate from my fingers. She focuses on the act, her lips parted. I lean closer to her, drop my voice, and gesture to the spots of her skin that are covered. “You want me to clean you up, too?”

Glaring, she gives a jerky shake of her head, but a flush works its way up her chest to her neck—one of the tells she’s getting turned on.

I step closer, backing her into the corner until she’s pressed against the cabinets behind her. “Sure about that? It wouldn’t take much. Just a lick or two. Maybe a couple sucks. We’d probably have to take your shirt off, though, and your bra, too. I really got down in there.”

Her head’s tilted back as she stares up at me, her chest rising and falling in quick succession from her labored breathing.

I lean into her space, lick up a path from her neck to her ear. “I think you do. I think you want my tongue all over you, don’t you, baby? I got you all dirty. Seems only fair I clean you up.” Before she can respond, my mouth closes over her shoulder, my tongue tracing along the chocolate I smeared there. By the time I’ve dipped into the neckline of her shirt, my tongue in the valley of her breasts, her nipples are pressed tight against the material, and she’s got a white-knuckled grip on the countertop behind her.

“Want me to stop?”

I wait a second. Two. And when she gives the slightest shake of her head, I take. Gripping her face in my hands, my mouth covers hers, my tongue slipping inside. She groans into the kiss, her hands finally coming up to clutch my forearms.

“Wait.” She wrenches her mouth from mine, turning her head to the side. “Cade, wait. Your sister.”

I focus on licking every stray ounce of chocolate I can find, her hands a counterpoint to her words as she holds me close. “Not home. Gone till four.”

“Shit! Four. I have to be at work at four!”

“We’ve got time. Now stop talking.”

I peel her jeans and panties off, then lift her onto the counter, desperate to feel her around me. With one hand, I fumble with the button of my jeans, the other busy between Winter’s thighs, rubbing soft circles around her clit, getting her ready for me. She’s moaning, her head resting back on the cabinets, and the sight of her there, half naked in my kitchen, is too much. Too fucking much, and I can’t get my goddamn jeans off.

When she notices, her hands are there, opening my jeans and yanking my boxers down just far enough to pull me out. Her hands are around my cock, pumping slowly, and I need inside her now.

My Two Cents & Stance on Ellora’s Cave vs Dear Author

September 29, 2014 Uncategorized 0

HNO7iz5S_400x400

I know I’m not the first to come out and publicly support Jane in her fight against the lawsuit being pursued by Ellora’s Cave against her for reporting items that are being reported via multiple outlets.  I cannot help but think about the old adage – Where there is smoke there is fire….

This lawsuit speaks to me as a decision made in desperation and in order to spark fear from those who would speak out against Ellora’s Cave.  Kudos to those who have publicly spoken about their experiences with this house and I hope they get a resolution that favors them.  To those who are caught up in this mess and publish via other platforms…

Please feel free to reach out to me…  I’m happy to help publicize you in any way as long as it isn’t an Ellora’s Cave title.

I’m going to state this…

At this point in time…  I will not support any title that is being published by Ellora’s Cave.  I’m sorry that it had to come to this but with your actions against Dear Author you have this blogger adamantly opposed to your house.  While I want to support the authors whose livelihoods you have harmed as a result of this stupidity I cannot in good conscience provide any of my dollars to your coffers.

I also will not support any of the authors who have publicly celebrated this action by Ellora’s Cave against Jane.  While you might not like her or her site publicly celebrating the attack of a blogger that has done so much to assist those who have been plagiarized.  You might also consider that an action like this made by a publishing house against someone reporting items that are in the public domain could quite as easily come against you one day.  Did you also consider that perhaps some of the funds being used by Ellora’s Cave to bring this lawsuit to being might be from funds they owe the authors, editors and others who are caught up in this fiasco???  Probably not… My guess is you didn’t think at all before you gloated.  Well, I and others noticed and trust me… we are very happily going to avoid your work in the future.

Again, I know my site isn’t as large as the many that have come out against this action by Ellora’s Cave but I can’t stay silent.

Good luck Jane!!!!!  Fight the fight and should you decide to set up a defense fund I’ll happily donate!  You’ve provided so much advice to me over the past couple of years that I cannot thank you enough!

Day 5 – Hopes for the Next Year – Giveaway 5/6

September 12, 2014 Uncategorized 10

Hiya everyone!!!!  Today is going to be a nice relaxing day of reading, sleeping and in general just vegging.  My hope is that I can reset my reading mojo and also get some much needed relaxation before I have to start doing more homework on Saturday.  I also am going out for a nice dinner with my partner in crime at RT – Rochelle.

My hopes for this next year are pretty mundane…

  • School – finish more classes and stay on the dean’s list.  I really dislike school but if I can keep this up I will be done in 2016 and can move on to the next level.
  • Personal – Eat healthier, workout and hopefully lose some weight.  I’m not good at making myself a priority but I need to get better at it.  I’m going to start taking yoga, be a bit pickier in what I eat and in general start working out more.  I hope to take things slowly but I think it is time for change.  Notice I’m not saying that I’m looking for a new relationship but if something turns up then I’m ok with that but it won’t be a priority to me.
  • Blog – I really want to find a happy balance between work, school, personal and blog life.  I hope to foster my current relationships with those who have been so generous with me over the past 2 years but I also want to grow.  I want to be more regular with my postings and hope that people will continue to enjoy what I place out here on this site.

I look forward to working and speaking with everyone!!  Thank you so much for being there for me and I hope we will continue to enjoy our love of books!!!

Today I have 2 wonderful prizes to give away!  One winner will receive the books, bag and flask while the other will receive a flask.  The flasks are items that a lot of people love including myself!!!  To enter just comment below with one of your hopes for this next year.  I’ll pick one winner for the set and one for the flask from entries received by September 19, 2014 at 11:59 pm US Central.

Day 4 – Pushing the Boundaries – Giveaway 4

September 11, 2014 Uncategorized 3

I have learned over the past couple of years that I am not as conservative in my beliefs or my choices of titles to read as I used to be.  In my personal life I was always someone that most people would guess is very staid and potentially vanilla in nature.  Those who really know me know that I am more open to new experiences and love to surprise people with facts like having been a cast member of a local group that acted out “Rocky Horror” every Friday and Saturday night.  If you told that to most that know me thru work they’d be shocked….  I am honestly an introvert but I am comfortable acting and performing in certain situations.  I’ve found that under the right circumstances I can push past my internal comfort zone to have fun playing a part.

In my reading life I find that I love reading books that take me to places, lifestyles and situations that I have never experienced nor will I ever experience but love to read about them.  Some of these include sexual situations and relationship types that I will never personally be privy to but reading a strong story that happens to include these situations makes me more open to seeing these relationships in real life.  I have never had an issue with alternative lifestyles but couldn’t understand why BDSM or polyamory would be something you would intentionally seek out.  By reading some of the authors I have read over the past couple of years I can understand why it might be attractive to some and understand a bit more than I might’ve had I not had those boundaries pushed.

One thing I wish people who don’t read romance would understand…. Romance today isn’t all bodice ripping and heaving bosoms…  Romance today covers subjects that are much more powerful while still allowing readers to escape.  Sure there are still the frilly, silly titles but I’ve read titles that have dealt with rape, suicide, PTSD, depression, religion, coming out, accepting you are homosexual, and many other topics that are deeper than I had expected.  I’m glad that I pushed past my own prejudices and started to read this genre as I’ve found a great set of people to talk with about books and deeper subjects than I had ever expected.  So….  now to the important stuff…

How has reading pushed your boundaries?  Have you started to see things that you never expected and have it impact your personal beliefs?  Just let me know something in the comments by September 19, 2014 at 11:59 pm Central Time for a chance to win….

Day 3 – A Few Things That Make Me Happy – Giveaway 3

September 10, 2014 Uncategorized 3

Since this is later than I would have preferred to have this go live… I’m gonna make it an easy post..

Things that make me happy –

  • Books – Yeah I know… easy peasy one but you don’t understand how much having books has meant to me in my life.  As an only child they were my way to escape reality and entertain myself if no one was around in the neighborhood.  I loved and still love the ability to get away and lost in the pages of a good book.  Those who know me well know I will read almost anything that strikes my fancy.  While you do mainly see romance on the site please expect the unexpected from me because if I am wandering the web I might just find something else that I just need to read.
  • My cats – Those who follow me on Twitter and some who see me on Facebook know that I enjoy my duo, Macaroni and Bella, even as they might annoy me with some of their antics…  You see Mac knows how to open cabinets and drawers so it can be a bit entertaining to see what he might do next time.
  • My new apartment – I’m loving my new space.  I have new furniture, new cookware and all around a much healthier space from both a physical perspective but most importantly a mental one.  I can do what I need to do without worrying about what the consequences might be if it doesn’t work for my partner.  I also can eat what I really want to eat which means that I’m eating less and in a few respects healthier.  This pattern will continue as I get more comfortable in this space.
  •  My friends both local and virtual – I cannot believe the outpouring of support I received from everyone as I dealt with the ending of my relationship.  From just being there for me to text, tweet or speak with to being understanding as reviews and other items slipped past my notice I cannot appreciate everyone enough.  I feel lucky to have such support from people that I’ve met and not met in person.  You make me happy to be a part of this community and I cannot thank you enough!
  • This blog – I know at times there are gaps in my review pattern but as everyone knows life has a way of throwing curveballs at you.  This site allows me to share books or things that strike my fancy and is an outlet for my normally introverted self.  To those who have visited, contributed posts or shared my site with others-  THANK YOU SO MUCH!  This is why I love to be here and it is a big reason why I’m doing this week of giveaways…..

In general I hope that you can identify with some of the items above and hope you’ll share with me some items that make you happy…

In fact that’s what the question of the day is…  Share with us what makes you happy for a chance to win the items below.. Yes that’s a Jill Shalvis Snowglobe.  Just share below and I’ll pick a winner from all entries received by September 19, 2014 at 11:59 pm US Central.

Linger by Lauren Jameson – Excerpt and Sponsored Giveaway!

September 8, 2014 Uncategorized 4

LingerbyLaurenJameson

So I reviewed this book last week and was blown away (read my review here).  I’ve been recommending this book to as many people as I can because who wouldn’t find an Alpha cowboy that craves submitting to a strong woman in the bedroom???  Add to it some angst as they both have to work thru Logan’s issues and you’ve got a thrilling read!

Well the lovely folks at Berkeley have been nice enough to share not only an excerpt with me but…  I can give away a copy of it to one lucky commentor!!!!  After you read the excerpt below you can either tell me what you thought of it or if you find the idea of an Alpha submitting in the bedroom as sexy as I do….  Comment by 11:59 pm Central, September 12th, 2014 to enter.  This contest is only open to US winners.

Excerpt:

Logan felt a wicked surge of excitement as the small Mistress planted herself in front of him, hands on her hips. Very sexy hips, he noted yet again, ones that flowed into a slender waist and the curves of full breasts. He’d felt a deep sense of satisfaction to find that she appeared every bit as interested in him as he was in her.

Something in him again warned him to find a different partner for the evening, one who would be satisfied with administering a flogging, then sharing hard, impersonal sex.

Every other part of him wanted the woman currently standing in front of him, though he knew somehow that she was going to push him further than he was comfortable. Just having met her had thinned the barriers he always kept in place.

He hadn’t been in the club for very long, but he was already feeling the pain from being trapped in the crush of people. A scary looking Mistress—or Master, he wasn’t quite sure—had started bearing down on him at the same time as the tasty treat in front of him, and he’d felt as if the walls had been closing in on him, stealing away his air.

But it was different with this one…

An experienced submissive, he could tell that she was a fairly new Mistress. The nerves were there, in her eyes, around the corners of her mouth. Still, despite the sweet features of her face, dominance seemed to seep out of her very pores, an exotic perfume that caught his attention like a dog with a steak.

And then there was that strange pull between them, the one that had snapped into place the second his arms had wrapped around her outside. The one that made every other dominant woman in the room seem dull and unappealing.

It was an irresistible combination for a man who ran the show everywhere besides the bedroom.

And he couldn’t ignore the fact that, since she’d introduced herself and glared at him with that bitchy expression that made his cock hard, he’d found it a little easier to breathe.

“What’s the problem, sweetheart?” He grinned down at her, his expression deliberately cocky. He needed to keep his defenses up from the start around this one, to keep her from sneaking too far into his psyche.

He waited to see if she would dismiss him immediately for his rudeness.

She arched an eyebrow at his term but didn’t comment on it, which left him mildly disappointed. Instead she nodded at his feet, looking like nothing so much a wet dream of a stern schoolteacher.

“Bottoms go barefoot in Veritas, sub. Remove the boots.”

Her voice was whiskey smooth with an undercurrent of sin, at odds with the girl-next-door face. Logan found himself wanting to fall to his knees and obey, to please her, and despite how much he wanted her, the notion didn’t sit well with him.

A mistress had to work much harder than saying a few words and looking pretty to earn that kind of response from him.

He’d felt the punch of attraction when their eyes had first met, but now he was wary. What kind of hold did she have on him already, to make him want so badly to please her?

Shaken by the notion, he grinned insolently and shook his head. “Make me, baby.”

Logan watched as heat flickered in her eyes which, upon closer inspection, were stormy grey rather than the expected blue.

He watched as she shrugged one shoulder, a simple gesture that was nevertheless full of innate grace.

“We’ll do it the hard way, then.” So caught up in the siren’s song of her voice, Logan was caught off guard when the little minx kicked her leg up with the smooth flexibility of a trained dancer and pressed her sharp stiletto heel against the thin denim of his crotch.

He froze when the perfectly positioned boot heel dug into the tender sac of his testicles, just enough to catch his attention.

“No need to get nasty, sweetheart.” Though he wasn’t overly concerned that she was one of those mistresses who took joy in cock and ball torture, he was still uncomfortable enough from the feelings coursing through him to be a smartass.

“Take off your boots.” Damn her, she looked completely calm and in control. Like she knew he would do as she said, simply because she had said it.

Their little standoff had drawn an audience, too, and the press of bodies around them made his throat constrict with the beginnings of claustrophobia.

“A hundred bucks on the little blonde.”

Logan flicked his eyes around the gathered crowd to find the speaker and glowered when he saw that it was Luca, the only acquaintance he had at In Vino Veritas. He would have snarled if Mistress S hadn’t chosen that moment to dig that stiletto in just a bit harder.

“I warned you.” She shrugged and smiled at him, and the smile made Logan’s entire body clench with pure, undiluted need. She leaned forward, a calculated move, he knew, but still he found his attention caught on the creamy swells of her breasts, offered up as they were in the almost indecently low neckline of her black lace corset.

He wanted to get his hands on those breasts more than he wanted his next breath.

His attention was still caught on them when she lowered her leg, and he grinned as he hoped, prayed, that she would lean forward a bit more, just enough for him to see a hint of nipple that he knew would be rosy pink.

“I’d still be happy to give you the ride of your life—” Logan’s words were cut off when the slender woman whirled behind him, her movements precise and controlled. He felt the sharp toes of her boots dig into the backs of his knees, and then he landed on his knees on the floor, his breath leaving his lungs in one uncomfortable jolt.

“What the—” He threw his hands out in front of him to protect his face when she pushed him down further and straddled his hips backwards. Despite the surprise and the uncomfortable position, his cock pushed against the thin denim of his jeans as his body registered the heat of her naked legs, pressing tightly into his torso.

Her ass was sweetly rounded and close enough to touch. Her skirt had ridden up when she moved, and he caught a hint of the sexy panties she wore beneath.

With firm hands, Mistress S tugged off one of his well-worn cowboy boots, and then the other. His socks followed. Standing, she caught his eye as she very deliberately stuffed a sock inside each boot, then handed the pair off to Luca, to tuck out of reach behind the bar, he assumed.

“What’s your name?” She asked, her voice steady, certain he would answer… and he did, though he hadn’t intended to.

“Logan.” He could hear the wariness in his own voice, and rightly so—this woman was nothing like he’d expected.

“Well, then. Logan.” Her words were stern. “I told you. Subs go barefoot here.”

Logan felt twin desires pulling inside of him. He wanted to apologize, to earn her favor.

He also wanted to wipe that smug smile off of her face. She’d won this round—and he hadn’t seen it coming, so points for her.

But he wasn’t tamed that easily.

“You going to punish me now, baby?” He ran his tongue over his lips, deliberately provoking her. He knew what would happen now, and he was looking forward to it.

She would take him to a private room, or to one of the many pieces of equipment set up around the massive play area of Veritas. She would try to dig deeper, and he would deflect. She would flog him, and he would be able to lose himself in the pain.

They would fuck, and then they would go their own ways. He’d head back to Montana until his needs could no longer be assuaged with his imagination and his own hand.

The fact that he didn’t care for the idea of leaving her was just a signal that he needed to do exactly that. She looked like she could draw out all of his secrets, and that just wasn’t going to happen.

Still, he thought he just might die if he didn’t get a taste of that creamy flesh spilling out over the top of her corset.

“Yes,” Mistress S replied, her face calm, though those grey eyes of hers reflected more than a hint of the turmoil that he was feeling himself. “I am.”

Then the woman did something Logan never could have seen coming.

She turned on her slender stiletto heel and walked away.

GRAYSON’S SURRENDER: Flight Surgeon Grayson Clark and NGO worker Lori Rutledge shared a passionate summer full of promise and ultimately heartbreak. After his turbulent childhood, Grayson knows well heís ill-equipped to offer Lori the security she craves. But Grayson can’t escape Lori’s allure when theyíre paired on a military rescue operation to an overseas orphanage. When one heart-tugging orphan charms her way into Lori’s life and Grayson’s heart, Lori and Grayson discover a new understanding of family and a free-falling surrender to love.

Excerpt from Grayson’s Surrender:
“Nice patch there, Major.”

The words fell from her lips with a light Southern drawl, whiskey warm and just as potent.

Gray glanced down at his sleeve. Anything. Anywhere. Anytime.

The insinuation crackled along the humidity-laden air. Gray let his gaze slide back to her. “Wanna test the motto out?”

Lori laughed, husky, if a bit tight. “Same old gray.” Her chin tipped. “Been there. Done that. Lost the T-shirt.”

His arms folded over his chest. “You left it at my place.”

She laughed again. The great husky laugh of hers that rolled right into him. Just as fast, she had his hormones bombarding the defenses of his reason. Of course sex, great sex, incredible anything, anywhere, anytime sex, had never been their problem. But the minute they’d set their feet on the floor….

TAKING COVER: Battle lines are drawn when Flight Surgeon Kathleen O’Connell temporarily grounds Captain Tanner Bennett from flying combat. No way does Tanner plan to watch his crew from the sidelines. Not that he has a choice, thanks to by-the-rules Kathleen and his ground duty assignment to investigate a crash. When Kathleen is teamed with him in the investigation, theyíre both diving for cover as they battle an attraction ready to detonate!

Excerpt from Taking Cover

He twisted in the chair. Looking. Finding. Her.

Kathleen stood silhouetted in the doorway.

His chair thudded to the barroom floor in a teeth-jarring landing. No flight suit for her tonight. She’d changed.

Man, how she’d changed.

Leather pants molded themselves to her every curve. They sealed over her trimly muscled calves, up her thighs to cup that bottom he’d been trying not to watch all day. Her hair flowed in a fiery curtain around her face, brushing the collar of her satin shirt. Scorching his eyes from across the smoky room.

She leaned over the bar to place her drink order. Her blouse inched up, baring a thin stripe of skin along her back.

Twelve years.

Twelve years hadn’t dimmed the memory of how soft, how warm, that skin had felt beneath his hands…

My thoughts:

Grayson’s Surrender – I really enjoyed reading about a couple who really never quit thinking about one another even when they were apart.  Grayson was hard-headed but sexy as hell and even when I wanted to slap sense in to him he proved he was worth the risk that Lori took in letting him back near her.  He’s misguided in his belief that he isn’t made for commitment but she’s also misguided in her thoughts that the only way for her to be happy was to be settled in one location.  Both of them find love with one another by rescuing an orphan from a war-torn country.  You’ll love the heat between them and feel for them as they struggle to decide for a final time if what they have in chemistry is really worth the biggest risk of all…
Take Cover – My favorite of the two stories…  Imagine having an amazing kiss 12 years previously but not being able to act on that attraction and longing.  Add to it two very stubborn, proud people and you have our couple.  They both have major issues with trusting others but as they both let their walls down they find that both hide damage that is not only hard to recover from but that they really do have what it takes to go all the way.  I loved seeing Kathleen finally find someone that truly accepted her for who she really was beneath the ice queen exterior and seeing Tanner find someone who really saw him.  She sees the damaged, sensitive yet strong man who needs someone to care for him and accept him for who he is.  They both had moments in this story where you will sigh with happiness because they are so sweet.  I adored the heart behind the bickering and when they finally gave in to the chemistry it was HOT!

Spotlight – The Reluctant First Lady – Venita Ellick

May 27, 2014 Uncategorized 0

New Women’s Fiction That’s Stirring Up a National Debate

by Venita Ellick

About the Author:
Venita Ellick was
fated to be a writer. She was named for a character in a book her mother was
reading at the time of the birth. As a young girl, she spent so much time in
libraries that librarians would save books for her almost daily visits. She
began writing stories in the first grade, which her mother

patiently read. The intervention of a career as an educator and raising three
sons delayed her focus on writing, but she has now completed three novels. The
Reluctant First Lady is her fourth.

Mistress of Mellyn by Victoria Holt and Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
captivated her as a teenager. The power and imagery of the printed word made
her wonder what each heroine was thinking and feeling. She wanted to be the woman
with the cape and hood standing on the edge of the cliff with the wind whipping
around her. The mysteries that could be found in stories fascinated her and are
echoed in The Reluctant First Lady.

Ellick draws on her experiences as a wife, mother, teacher, and principal to
create her characters. Her sense of humor and recognition of the absurd and
often whimsical nature of life have allowed her to capture her characters’
lives with authenticity and emotional resonance.

Venita and her husband David have experience as a two-career couple. They live
on an island in the state of Washington.

The Reluctant First Lady asks –

“Just how much should a woman sacrifice for the person she loves?”

Summary:

Ashley Taylor has been straightforward with her husband, the president-elect of the United States. She supported his candidacy, but she has no intention of assuming the traditional role of First Lady—a position she describes as “First Hostess.” Instead, she will resume her own career as head of one of the largest art museums in New York. The aftermath of her decision triggers reactions from the public, news commentators, late night comedians, and other political factions. While Ashley and Michael wrestle with saving their marriage and preserving their professional lives, the country debates whether the role of First Lady is a necessity, how the media influences the lives of public figures, and how much a woman should sacrifice for the person she loves.

Excerpt:

From Chapter 3 of The Reluctant First Lady

Applause and pandemonium broke out on the other side of the curtain, indicating Michael had reached the end of his speech.

A stage manager nodded and, with Ashley and the twins leading the way, followed by the vice president- elect, his wife, and family, she stepped onto the stage and into the bright lights. The noise from the crowd grew in intensity as each of them came into view. They all walked forward to stand beside Michael, Ashley and the twins to his left; Robert Hughes, Catherine, and their children to his right.

The chaos and elation vibrating through the crowd was intoxicating. Cheers from a wildly exuberant audience and music blocked out what individuals were saying, but the camaraderie of those on the stage was evidenced by their smiles, hugs, and claps on the back. Before the world, she and Michael looked like the perfect couple. Michael pulled his family, plus Richard and his family, toward him while photographers snapped pictures of this historic event.

Amid the excitement, it almost went unnoticed that a reporter shouted a question at Ashley. She ignored him, hoping he would go away.

The reporter repeated his question. “Mrs. Taylor, what causes do you intend to champion during the next four years in the White House?”

Ashley winced inwardly, but no outward expression marred her serene expression. She had a choice. She could tell the truth or continue to go along with the lie. Damn it. She’d been dodging questions like this for months about what special causes she intended to champion if her husband were elected. In fact, she’d become a master of evasion, not something she was proud of. Unquestionably the smartest thing to do would be to give the same canned response she’d been giving throughout the campaign. It would be a lie, all of it. But then she wouldn’t be accused of rocking the boat, a boat, she might add, that she knew was taking on a lot of water.

She was tired of being evasive. She was sick to death of lying by omission. Michael’s managers had convinced her that he wouldn’t be elected if she declared her intentions. But, Michael had been elected. Was it possible that she was making more of this than necessary?

She leaned toward the reporter and his microphone and began speaking in a quiet, clear voice.

“First, I’d like to thank everyone here and at home for their incredible support throughout the campaign. I’m extremely proud of Michael and have always believed he’d be a great leader and a great president. The American people have chosen wisely and well this day. As for me, with the election over, I’ll be returning to my job as director of the Cameron Museum of Art in New York. It’s never been my intention to serve as the First Lady. Over half of the families in our country are two-career families. Our family isn’t any different. In fact . . .”

Ashley felt Michael’s hand on her elbow. “Ashley, just smile and wave. We’re getting off of the stage now.”
