Catalia "Cat" Fisa is a powerful clairvoyant known as the Kingmaker. This smart-mouthed soothsayer has no interest in her powers and would much rather fly under the radar, far from the clutches of her homicidal mother. But when an ambitious warlord captures her, she may not have a choice…

Griffin is intent on bringing peace to his newly conquered realm in the magic-deprived south. When he discovers Cat is the Kingmaker, he abducts her. But Cat will do everything in her power to avoid her dangerous destiny and battle her captor at every turn. Although up for the battle, Griffin would prefer for Cat to help his people willingly, and he's ready to do whatever it takes to coax her…even if that means falling in love with her.

There is only 1 problem when you get an ARC in May for a title that doesn’t release until August…

YOU WANT THE NEXT STORY NOW NOW NOW!!!!

Many of you know that I started reading romance only a few short years ago (*cough* 5ish *cough*) but until then my reading was almost always Sci-Fi/Fantasy or mysteries….  This story made me happy because it weaves some romance in to an interesting High Fantasy world which made my internal younger self so happy.

We have a world ruled by people who wield magic except for in the forgotten kingdom that just experienced something noone thought could ever happen….  They have a warlord without magic who managed to overthrow the tyrants and put his sister in charge of the realm.  This is something that is amazing to the people but as we get in to the story we just really don’t understand how unusual this is and how much of a change this could mean for the people in this entire world.  This is a world of the Gods where dragons exist and power is corrupting.

I found the idea of someone who was more than what she appeared to be fascinating but mainly I was intrigued by trying to figure out exactly who she really is.  Cat is part of a huge puzzle that I just want to solve but enjoy finding out the bits and pieces that the author teases us with as the story unfolds.  She’s powerful, extremely sarcastic and very slow to trust people around her but the thing that drew me to her was the fact that you know she’s so severely hurt that all she really wants is to be loved, cared for and have something she never got growing up…. unconditional acceptance.  She made me laugh at times with her speak/act first then stumble as she realizes she’s not completely in her element around these people.  I also appreciated the sheer honesty (other than her feelings for Griffin) with everyone around her.

Griffin was absolutely mesmerizing to me as you could see that he wanted her from the get-go and not just for her unique power.  He’s an ass at times but as you get to know him it makes sense why he is acting that way but at the same time you want to strangle him as he tries to keep her safe by stifling her.  I enjoyed seeing him struggle with his alternating need to hurt her for her stubbornness and kiss the fight out of her because of his attraction.  He’s also hard to read in some respects as you aren’t certain if he really sees her or her power and what she can give him.  I liked that when he was wrong he admitted it but I also appreciated how he honestly was trying to do what was best.  He’s going to be fun to watch in the future stories and I cannot wait to see what happens as he finds out more about his Cat.

The other people in the story also fascinated me as well as the weaving in of the Gods such as Poseidon and Zeus but seeing things in a different way in this new world.  I enjoyed learning about the kingdoms but mainly am going to enjoy seeing how the world resets itself in this time of change.  I also look forward to seeing more of the Betas and seeing them find their partners or even just getting to know more about them and Griffin’s family.

Now…

When do I get to read book 2?????  Huh…  huh… huh…

"You have to go. I won't be able to control myself. I've wanted you so bad for so long and after I've been in the cage...I can't think straight." He gives a guttural groan and his fist clenches on my hip.

Primitive. Primal. His need speaks to me. I tighten my grip on his neck and rock up to kiss him. He takes over. His kiss is hard and demanding.

"Mine." His voice is raw, savage and for a moment I truly believe he may lose control.

He rules in the ring

Two years ago, Jake and Amanda were going hot and heavy. But when Jake wanted more, Amanda walked away. Jake immersed himself in mixed martial arts, living life on the edge. But that didn't dull the pain of Amanda's rejection-until a chance encounter throws them together.

A high-powered lawyer, Amanda was a no-strings-attached kind of girl. But two years after her breakup with Jake, she still hasn't found anyone who gets her heart pumping the way he did. And then he shows up in her boardroom, hot as sin and needing help...

But can he rule her heart?

Jake is darker, sexier, and impossible to resist. As their chemistry builds, Amanda's not sure if she can stay in control, or if she's finally willing to let him claim her body and soul.

Publishers Weekly Best Summer Reads (Romance) 2014 and starred review!

If you are looking for an intense hero then you have it in Jake.  If you are looking for a heroine who can stand on her own but still needs someone to push her to expand her horizons then you have that in Amanda.  In the pairing you have a couple who really did need help in embracing their true selves that have been buried under family obligation and fear for so many years.

Amanda is a kick-ass attorney who is so stuck on getting approval from her parents that she has basically buried herself in the job path that she thinks will make her father proud.  She’s also so afraid of being in a relationship that she runs from anything that smacks of commitment which is why she left Jake when he pressed for more.  She’s okay with having quick, purely physical affairs and has an arrangement for booty calls from a man she considers a friend.  When she runs back in to Jake and circumstances force them to share the same space again she’s overwhelmed by her need for him even as the rest of her life crumbles around her.  She’s strong but I wanted to slap her numerous times as she seems to be so stuck on what is “proper” versus what is truly right that she almost misses out on finding where she can really do the most good.  I liked her willingness to help others and that is what saved her from annoying me too badly.  She’s got a good heart even as she behaves stupidly.

Jake is so growly during many sections of this book but I loved how much he was willing to prove to Amanda that what they had was worth fighting for.  He really proves how much he believes in her even as she turns away from him.  I also appreciated how he worked on turning down the possessive and aggressive need to go caveman on her.  He wasn’t perfect but he did try which to me counts for a lot.  As he pushes her to embrace who she really is there is also a push for him to be who he really is and to quit trying to be the perfect son.  I liked how he really did start to practice what he was preaching to her and how it ended up working out for him with his family business.

Overall this was a steamy, hot read with some fun characters and interesting potential stories for future releases.  Special thanks to NetGalley.com and Sourcebooks for giving me the chance to read this in exchange for my honest opinion.

Thrill Ride

The Blurb:

He’s Gone Rogue

Ex-Navy SEAL Rock Babineaux’s job is to get information, and he’s one of the best in the business. Until something goes horribly wrong and he’s being hunted by his own government. Even his best friends at the covert special-ops organization Black Knights Inc. aren’t sure they can trust him. He thinks he can outrun them all, but his former partner—a curvy bombshell who knows just how to drive him wild—refuses to cut him loose.

She Won’t Back Down

Vanessa Cordova hasn’t been the team’s communication specialist
very long, but she knows how to read people—no way is Rock guilty of murder. And she’ll go to hell and back to help him prove it. Sure, the sexy Cajun has his secrets, but there’s no one in the world she’d rather have by her side in a tight spot. Which is good, because they’re about to get very tight…

My Thoughts:

Sigh…  I want a sexy Cajun of my very own!  I guess I will just deal with not getting one of my own by living vicariously through books.

Rock has disappeared from Black Knights Inc and with that a mystery starts.  He’s been listed as a rogue agent and there is an order to capture him or even kill him by the government.  What he is accused of is being a murderer which BKI knows can’t be true.  He’s really hiding to try to get to the bottom of the mess plus keep his family safe.  He really doesn’t have a biological family but the gang at BKI is his family in all the ways that count.  If he also has a soft spot for one of his coworkers then we just won’t talk about it.  He’s always kept himself away from anything that speaks of love because of things that come to light in this book.  My heart broke for him as you learn more about his history and then find out exactly what he has done.  I personally wanted to kill those responsible for the sheer amount of pain he’s had to go through and was very happy when this incredible woman manages to get him to really start to live again.  He’s such a wonderful soul hidden under this majorly tough exterior and seeing it break made me tear up a bit.

Vanessa knows what they are saying about Rock can’t be true.  He can’t be a murderer but there has to be more to the story.  She takes on the tough task of finding him and getting him to come in to BKI for help.  She also is incredibly attracted to him for more than just sex.  She is drawn to this sexy Cajun and the way he makes her feel more than any man has ever managed.  She pushes him to do things he swore he would never do but she also pushes herself to overcome major fears she has had due to a traumatic event from her childhood.  She’s strong and yet is willing to make a major sacrifice in order to keep the man she loves safe.  I enjoyed her strength and yet also enjoyed that she opened up to him in ways she never has been able to.  They both are able to overcome so many things together that their love story is just an awesome page turner that you won’t easily be able to put down until you are finished.

Read the rest of the series so you get to know the rest of the BKI team and then read about our sexy Cajun.  Thanks to NetGalley.com and Sourcebooks Casablanca for giving me the chance to read this in exchange for my honest review.
