Ahhhh The Joys of Christmas Are Upon Us!! — Contest

December 11, 2013 Contest 6

This season means many different things to people –

  • Time to visit family
  • Time to enjoy vacation from work
  • Food
  • Sugary treats

Well and then some people enjoy watching holiday movies and listening to holiday music but after many years of working retail I just look forward to time off!  I can’t have a Christmas tree in the apartment without having to come up with some amazing engineering to not only keep it from being pulled down by two spoiled cats but I also can’t have any real evergreen anywhere near me or you won’t see me at work or anywhere without being completely drugged up due to an allergy.  I love real trees but….  can’t do it..  *sigh*

So…  this year I think I am going to make meatloaf and scalloped potatoes for the holiday meal plus I might just break down and make Aeblekagen for dessert:

Recipe:

Bread (regular old white bread)

Butter

Cinnamon Sugar

Applesauce

Heat oven to 350 degrees.

Layer the ingredients in a casserole dish or some sort of baking dish.  Butter at bottom then in the order listed in the ingredient list ending with Cinnamon Sugar.

Put in oven and bake until it smells done and looks golden and delicious on top.

Serve with whipped cream or ice cream..  warm is best.

Ok so there aren’t measurements above but hey that’s the way I was told the recipe other than I gave you an oven temp <I was just told a warm oven>. Welcome to the world of my mom’s recipes.  <I really do love you mom but at times…  thankfully I know what things should look/taste like so using your recipes works for me>  She’s a great cook but anything other than extreme baking gets a recipe with no real measurements and at times notes like —  Something sweet…  well you know I usually have syrup around so that’s what I tend to grab..  <This was in her recipe for Swiss Steak> — and you have to really get creative to get the balance right.  So in honor of this and because I can…

I’m going to give away to one lucky commentor below a fun gift set that contains signed paperbacks of the Brenda Novak Whiskey Creek Series and a cute mini-tote bag….

I make my husbands Nanna’s Apple crumble pie for the holidays. I like to try and carry on the tradition for him. 🙂

My children and I are actually trying to find our own. We go through the cook books and other recipes we can find, pick out what we want to try, go buy all the ingredients, then come home and make them lol

Divinity Rolls (actually pecan logs) and Mamie’s Million Dollar Fudge are family holiday favorites with my two. Both are extremely labor intensive, no shortcuts allowed and I’ll be spending next weekend making those! LOL!

Question on the Aeblekagen – do you cut off the crusts from the white bread?

Sorrel is a drink that I associate with Christmas cause it’s the only time of year you really see it…Thanks for the great giveaway!

Every year, my uncle is so happy when I make him peanut clusters. A simple tin full of chocolaty, peanuty goodness puts a smile on his face!
